According to Cleveland’s (2011) article, A Working Guide to the Landscape of Arts for a Change, “the arts could translate to the needs of communities and public institutions without losing power or integrity. We learned not only that the creative process has an extraordinary capacity to heal, but that it was necessary for human and community development” (Cleveland, 2011 , p. 3).
This excerpt fundamentally describes an often overlooked benefit of art: therapy on both an individual and community-basis. And, what I found in my research is that there are not enough programs that utilize art as a therapeutic resource for people struggling with physical and/or emotional ailments. However, there are myriad opportunities to utilize this benefit after all. Indeed, through my mapping of my community, I have found that there are many resources to provide young, local artists an opportunity to attend workshops, exhibit their own work, and promote their work as a business. The South Florida area is highly saturated, and surrounded by a lot of art studios, galleries, art fairs, and art events. Each of these outlets of creative expression can—if utilized and understood—be a source of individual and community therapy. I intend on attending a few various program such as: Legacy Art Studio, F.A.T. Village Center for the Arts, and professional development classes at ArtServe.
BUILD & IMPROVE
F.A.T. Village Center for the Arts is an art center that provides adult, student, and children art classes. The classes focus on field-based learning and are kept to small numbers to allow for and enable individualized learning.
NSU Art Museum is an art museum that offers a range of genres, tours, classes, workshops, lectures, etc. for students and adults within the Fort Lauderdale art community.
MUSE is an interdisciplinary music, dance, and art program that offers classes and experiences from the age of 2 years old to adults. MUSE offers workshops and shows.
Coral Springs Artists Guild, Inc. strives to provide artists in the area with exhibition opportunities, and support to display their work to sell, collaborate, and receive accolades. The guild provides artists with the opportunity to collaborate, promote, and attend various workshop---as well as teacher the youth in the community.

The Performance Project Theatre Company is a children’s educational theatre program, and adult theatre troop. The program offers various musical, and drama-related programs at both during school and after school times.
Broward Center for Visual and Performing Arts offers classes, workshops, master classes, intensives, educator educational programs, programs for schools, internships, scholarships, and many opportunity to educate and involve various ages, and backgrounds in the community.
Wynwood Art Classes offers a variety of children, teenagers, and adult art classes and workshops in various art media. The program also assists high school students in portfolio preparation in regards to applying to art programs or schools.
Miami International University of Art and Design is a non-profit organization that offers adults various collegiate-level art classes and workshops to apply towards a degree or to apply towards professional development program.
Delmar Arts Academy is an art focused program for early elementary and pre-primary aged children. The program offers a variety of offerings such as: summer programs, after school program, and an art-focused school program for pre-k to 1st grade students.

Children’s Corner: Art Therapy for Children is a center that runs under the direction of Dr. Peg Dunn-Snow. The program focuses on working with children who are either autistic, or coping with a parental divorce.
Art Therapy South Florida is a center that runs under the direction of Dr. Janet Bush. The program focuses on working with individuals ranging from: autism, anxiety, grief, learning disorders, chronic pain, sleep disturbances, risky behavior, etc.
Taft Art Therapy Program is a center that runs under the direction of Dr. Joan Schreier. The program focuses on working with children, families, and caregivers therapeutically through the arts.
Brush Strokes Art Therapy, Inc. focuses on working with children, families, caregivers, adults, and individuals that particularly are dealing with emotional trauma and grief. Therapy sessions are available through group sessions or individual sessions.

Las Olas Art Fair offers over the span of three weekends, over three-hundred national and international artists in a beautiful showcase of a variety of media. The fair takes place outdoors and is both pet & children friendly.
